There was no spur-of-the-moment, cross-country Valentine's trip this year (unlike
last year), which was fine by me because I consider Valentine's Day to be a purely exploitative marketing phenomena concocted by retailers. bah-humbug.
Factored into the mix this year is that we now have a mortgage payment! So we agreed to forgo gifts... or so I thought. Under the guise of "Valentine's Day," Steve got me a
Microsoft Zune- which I had been eyeing for the past month. He says he got it for me because he felt guilty for having bought a
Microsoft XBox 360 several weeks ago; but I think Steve - being the inveterate romantic that he is- just wanted to exchange gifts ;)
So what do I do? I leave work early on Valentine's Day to beat the rush to
Fry's Electronics and buy a non-expiring gift card. Not particularly imaginative or romantic, but by request- since Steve wanted to be able to pick his games himself. Fine by me, as I am a big believer in gift cards. Easy, quick, to the point, and ensures that the recipient will like their gift because they got to choose it themselves=)
As for the Zune, I exchanged it for a
Sony Walkman Video MP3 Player . After reading lots of online reviews on both MP3 players, Sony won hands-down for sound, ease of use, and compatibility with lots of online music stores. I much preferred the Zune's overall sleek look and some of its features (e.g. wireless syncing); but I'd much rather have a no-fuss, awesome-sounding MP3 player to drown out all the
commuting Chatty Cathys ;;)
And here's how we spent Valentine's Day 2008:
